Privacy Policy

The AviGrade app does not collect, store, or share any personal data with its developer or any third party. Your evaluation data never leaves your device or your own private iCloud account. If you write to us through this website, see section 8.

1. What AviGrade Does

AviGrade is an aviation competency evaluation tool based on the ICAO/EASA competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) methodology. It allows flight instructors and evaluators to assess pilot and instructor competencies using structured observable behaviours, scoring, and reporting.

2. Data We Collect

The app collects nothing. AviGrade does not have servers, does not require account registration, and does not transmit any data to the developer or any third party.

AviGrade integrates no analytics or advertising SDKs. iOS's built-in MetricKit may record crash and performance diagnostics, but these are stored only on your device, contain only technical device and crash information (never your evaluation data), and are never sent automatically. You can optionally share a diagnostic report with support from Settings — only then, and only by your action, does it leave your device.

3. Data Stored on Your Device

All data you enter in AviGrade — trainee names, competency evaluations, scores, notes, handwritten signatures, any photos you attach, and PDF reports — is stored exclusively on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework.

Lite tier: All evaluation data is held in memory only and is discarded when the session ends. Nothing is written to disk.
Full tier: Evaluation sessions are saved locally on your device. If you have iCloud enabled, your data is automatically synced to your private iCloud account via Apple's CloudKit framework.

If you grant camera access, AviGrade uses it only so you can attach a photo (such as a document) to an evaluation. These photos are stored locally with the session and are never transmitted to the developer.

Your role under data protection law: because everything stays on your own device and iCloud, the developer never receives or processes the personal data you enter (such as trainee names or licence numbers). Under the GDPR and equivalent laws, you — the instructor, examiner, or training organisation — act as the data controller for that data; the developer is neither its controller nor its processor. You are responsible for having a lawful basis to record it, for informing trainees where required, and for its retention and deletion. You can delete any session and its data in the app at any time.

4. iCloud Sync (Full tier)

When iCloud sync is active, your evaluation data is stored in your personal, private iCloud database. This data is:

Accessible only to you and your Apple ID.
Never accessible to the AviGrade developer.
Governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

You can disable iCloud sync at any time in your device's Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud.

5. PDF Reports and Backup Files

AviGrade can generate PDF evaluation reports and backup files (plain JSON, or password-encrypted .avigrade files). These files are created locally on your device and are only shared if you explicitly choose to do so using the iOS share sheet. The developer has no access to these files at any time.

6. Third-Party SDKs

AviGrade uses no third-party libraries, frameworks, or SDKs. The app is built exclusively with Apple's own frameworks (SwiftUI, SwiftData, CloudKit, and MetricKit).

7. Children's Privacy

AviGrade is intended for professional use by certified flight instructors and evaluators. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect any data from children.

8. This Website (avigrade.com)

This section covers the website, not the app. The app, as described above, sends nothing to us.

Who is responsible: AviGrade, reachable at support(at)avigrade.com.
What we collect: only what you send us through the contact form (name, email, topic and message), the beta form (name, email, role, organisation and anything you tell us about yourself), or the waitlist form (your email only).
Why, and on what basis: to answer your message, to assess your request and invite you to the beta, or to email you when AviGrade launches. The basis is your request itself — you write to us and we reply (GDPR art. 6(1)(b)) — and your consent when you send the form.
Who processes it for us: the site and its forms are hosted by Netlify, Inc. (USA), acting as our processor. Netlify is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and also relies on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Like any web host, Netlify handles technical data such as your IP address when you visit, to serve the pages and keep the service secure.
How long we keep it: beta requests until the beta programme ends; waitlist emails until we announce the launch; contact messages for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry. Then they are deleted.
No cookies, no tracking: the website uses no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and its fonts are served from this site, not from third parties.
Your rights: you can ask to access, correct or delete your data, object to or restrict its use, or withdraw your consent, by writing to the address above.

9. Changes to This Policy

If we ever change how AviGrade handles data, this page will be updated and the "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the change. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
